About IDEAL

Welcome to Inclusion, Diversity and Equity for All Leander (IDEAL). We are a group of community members who live and work in Leander and want to make it a more inclusive place. IDEAL members promote awareness, education, and action in Leander to drive diversity and inclusion and eliminate discrimination based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion or belief system, age, marital status, socio-economic status, disability, ethnicity, political affiliation, or other characteristics.

IDEAL History

Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity for All Leander began in response to community events in Spring of 2019. At that time, Leander was the subject of local and national attention for a planned event and anti-LGBTQ protest at the Leander Library, and for the City of Leander’s choice to cancel the library’s public room rentals and citizen comments at council meetings as a result. As examples of discrimination surfaced, our founding members decided to do something productive to bring people together and ensure that all Leander residents are treated equally. From those discussions, IDEAL was born, and additional members joined the group to support our neighbors and combat bigotry in all its forms.

IDEAL has continued to expand throughout 2020, and today, we promote awareness, education, and action in Leander to drive diversity and inclusion and eliminate all forms of discrimination. We believe that recent national and local events in Summer of 2020 reinforced these needs, and they’ve spurred greater interest in how IDEAL can support Black and African American residents and other communities of color in our area. We are working to educate ourselves and others on issues facing marginalized members of our community and to understand how we can help Leander become a more inclusive city to all.

IDEAL Leadership

IDEAL is a loosely-structured group of residents connected through community conversations and social media and facilitated entirely by volunteers. We are actively seeking to diversify both membership and leadership with others who are willing to share their perspective and volunteer time and energy to further our goals. If you support equality and want to get involved, we want you. Spread the word. Invite friends who support our goals. Learn about issues in our community. Share your skills and expertise. And help us make a difference for everyone.
